Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has kicked off his campaign in Anambra

Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has kicked off his campaign with a visit to Anambra

The senator met with a large group of his supporters in the state and urged them to support his bid which he says was informed by the economic meltdown and killings in the country

Kwakwaso expressed confidence that he would win the presidential race as long as he is able to emerge victorious at the APC primary election

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (APC-Kano Central) has kicked off his 2019 presidential campaign with a visit to Anambra on Thursday, February 8, according to New Telegraph reports.

During his visit to the southeast state, Kwakwaso, who is also a former governor of Kano state, met with the Hausa community in the state and the leadership of his group in the state, the Kwakwaso Movement, which is led by Eddy Ndiche.

On arrival in the state, Kwankwaso also paid a courtesy call to the traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alex Onyido, who reportedly gave him a royal blessing.

The senator then moved to Ndiche’s house, where he noted that his first hurdle would be to emerge victorious at the primaries of the All Progressive Congress, as he addressed his group. To this end, he asked for support to achieve his goal.

The APC chieftain stated that his decision to contest for the presidency was informed by the economic meltdown and incessant killings in the country.

He said: “I am in this contest because I want to restore the lost glory of the country. I have come to see the people of the state and thank them for their support to me.

“The southeast region is important in this journey because we cannot do without them. I need your support.

“Election is not a do-or-die and my successor, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is opposing my ambition should have a rethink and join me to better the welfare of Nigerians.

“The only hurdle before us is the primary election. I assure you, if I am able to win the primaries, winning the main election will not be difficult because I know I will win.”

He called on the federal government to show more concern towards the governed, as he lamented over the recent killings in the country.

The senator also commended the Hausa community for coming out in large numbers to welcome him.

Speaking at the occasion, Ndiche lauded the senator for making time for the visit despite his busy schedule and assured him that Anambra state would support his ambition.

A Non-Govermental Organisation, Kwankwasiyya Pillars of the Nation (KPN), threw its support behind Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The group said the former governor's achievement was enough to instill confidence in people that he can rule the country come 2019.

This statement was released by Comrade Ja’afar Ishaq Gadun-Albasa, who said that Nigeria needs a person of Kwankwaso's calibre and achievement in 2019

What kind of person is Kim Jong-un -- North Korea Dictator ?

Sy Gunson
"In my opinion, from various observations, he is an intelligent high stakes gambler. His risk taking is perceived as crazy by most people, but personally I think he is intensely sane & quite courageous".

According to quora.com, Kim Jong un (also spelled Kim Yong eun) born 8th January, 1984 was the youngest of three boys and a sister with the same father but a complex family in which he had one step brother recently involved in a coup attempt with his uncle.

As a teenager he loved American basketball and was very athletic before a car crash gave him crippling injuries. He is described by friends in his youth as being very determined, competitive & yet quite shy with girls.

Kim Jong un appears to have developed type 2 diabetes since those injuries which suggest to me at least that he is a man very frustrated with physical limitations.

As a teenager he attended German-speaking Steinhoelzli school in Berne from 1998 to 2000. He was schooled in Switzerland under an assumed name Pak un with a diplomat masquerading as his father. He also had to attend school with a bodyguard masquerading as the same age. (in white in this picture next to Kim).

According to his friend Joao Micaelo, Pak Un was a big fan of the Chicago Bulls. They spent 80% of their time together playing Basketball. As schoolmates they used to play basketball, watch Jackie Chan action movies, do homework, and play video games. A school administrator said Pak Un attended a class for non-German speaking pupils but then quickly moved over to another German speaking class. He was described as well-integrated, diligent and ambitious.

As a 14 year old boy Kim also developed a passion for flying and unlike most boys of his age enjoyed the opportunity for access to large transport category aircraft.

He routinely pilots Soviet era An-2 Biplanes just for pleasure.

Kim was exceptionally talented at Maths and Physics. He also developed fluency in German, English and French. He may also have mastered Mandarin spoken by his grandfather Kim Il Sung who led a small guerilla force in Munchukuo from 1935 until 1945 aligned with Chinese communists. He would undoubtedly be very proud of his Grandfather’s role in fighting for the liberation of Korea from Japanese occupation. That suggests he has a strong hostility towards Japan.

His grandfather would have instilled in him a deep mistrust for Americans given the behaviour of General Douglas McArthur in appointing South Korean dictator Syngman Rhee in May 1948 and trying to impose Rhee’s control over Koreans still living under Soviet administration in the North. The Soviet Governor, General Shytkov appointed Un’s Grandfather as the political leader of North Korea in September 1948 in defiance of US wishes. From then until June 1950, Syngman Rhee not only repeatedly threatened to lead an invasion of north Korea but several times sent ROK Army forces across the 38th Parallel to attack North Korea urged on by General McArthur.

For Kim Jong Un therefore the animosity for America is quite personal and very raw. I would not assess his attitude as that of a madman or someone being irrational at all. His hostility is found in historical provocations towards his grandfather and later to his father Kim Jong Il.

In his shoes as a young man, I would have felt very constrained and determined to break out to make my own mark on the world. I would assess that Kim Jong Un does not suffer fools but does form strong bonds with people he likes and trusts. He is likely to be very vengeful if crossed.

If the west wants to pursue diplomacy with North Korea we should be mindful of that respect for his grandfather. President Jimmy Carter announced 23 August 2017 that he intends to visit North Korea to negotiate release of US nationals in DPRK jails. Undoubtedly President Carter also hopes to salvage the mess created in relations between these two nations aswell.

Just days ago I spoke with a Chinese friend about North Korea. He said that prior to Nixon’s visit to China there was only hatred and mistrust. I honestly believe the solution with North Korea is respectful diplomacy and not insults.

State controlled media reported Un’s uncle & close adviser, Chang Song-thaek, was arrested whilst plotting a coup in December 2013. This led to a purge of those aligned with his uncle and several grizzly executions. There are suggestions China was behind the coup which would explain chilling of relations with Beijing.

There appear to have been various dynastic intrigues swirling around Un throughout his life. This would suggest Un is a very wary and aloof character who takes time to trust people if ever at all.

Kim Jong-un was the product of his father’s marriage to a Third wife Ko Yong-hui.

Kim is a father now with three children. He relives stress and tension with alcohol and smoking. He still indulges in his love for basketball as witnessed by his patronage of the game throughout North Korea.

Kim Jong Un had a half brother Kim Jong-nam, who was assassinated in Malaysia in February 2017. Kim Jong-nam had been under Chinese protection and according to various sources, they had groomed him for a coup attempt that was in planning in 2013 as Un’s successor.

He also had an older brother Kim Jong-chol who fell into disfavor with Un’s father for gambling addictions and wild night clubbing in London. Kim Jong Un was recalled from schooling overseas when his father deemed Un should be his successor. Un was recalled from Switzerland sent to a military academy to prepare him for leadership.

Whilst Un obviously loved his father, their relationship may also have been distant and strained. Un may have felt his father was weak or soft negotiating with America in six party talks 2003–2009. By the end of this period Un’s father was undoubtedly under a lot of strain and frail. His father died in 2011 catapulting Kim Jong Un to the role of the nation’s leader at just 27.

In 1974 Egypt exported examples of the Scud-B and Scud-C tactical ballistic missile, plus a variety of SA-2, SA-3 and SA-5 surface to air missiles. The country developed an impressive capability to manufacture its own copies of these missiles and then began exporting copies around the globe. In 1992 the United States imposed trade sanctions on North Korea. In retaliation in late 1993 North Korea called off inspections of Yeongbyon nuclear reactor under the NPT.

Tensions soared and the Pentagon openly proposed to attack North Korea. Then President Jimmy Carter acted as a circut breater and had the courage to fly to Pyongyang where he had unofficial talks with Un’s grandfather.

In May 1994 Un’s grandfather made an offer to President Carter to abandon missile production and nuclear development in return for normalized trade & diplomatic ties with USA. This led to official Geneva talks. North Korea also sought to cancel the Korean Armastice and replace it with an enduring Peace Treaty. In October 1994 an agreement was signed providing a framework for replacing the Yeongbyon Heavy Water Reactor, with less threatening Light water reactors and in the meantime shipments of food and fuel oil to make up the shortfall in electrical production caused by taking Yeongbyon off line

During these talks it also emerged the Pentagon had developed a war plan for attacking the Yeongbyon nuclear plant and invading North Korea from the South. Eventually a new Republican administration called off promises to supply fuel oil agreed under the framework and by 2003 North Korea scrapped the agreement and resumed work on nuclear weapons.

I am just guessing at this point but taking all of the above into consideration I would expect that Un is driven by a profound sense of duty to his nation and his grandfather’s vision.

He is likely a fierce nationalist, ie Korea for Koreans. Anyone who has studied the history of Korea’s subjugation by Manchu and by the Japanese would understand where that sense of national pride comes from.

That is why I don’t see him as a selfish or self obsessed man. I don’t think Westerners grasp that the Korean people have been invaded so many times that independence and national self determination are behind current tensions.

Kim Jong-un is likely the very opposite. A very selfless man who lives for very high ideals and out of a sense of service for others. I do not think he could have been so resolute standing up to American military might without a firm core of coznviction. He is someone whom I would find fascinating to get to know

Muslims will replace Jews as America's second-largest religious group by 2040

Number of American Muslims will hit 8.1m by 2050 - 2.1% of the total population.

In a report published by NEIL MURPHY,
Muslims are set to become the second largest religious group in the United States by 2040, according to projections by Pew Research Centre.

America's Muslim population is expected to hit 8.1m by 2050 - more than double the current figure - due to migration and high fertility rates. Judaism is currently America's second largest religion but this is likely to change in the coming decades, say researchers.

Although the US Census Bureau does not collect data on Americans' religious beliefs, estimates by Pew and other outside agencies suggest that there are 3.45 million Muslims living in America today, a significant increase from the 2.35 million Muslims over a decade ago.

Migration from Pakistan, India and Iran have typically driven Islamic migration to the United States but recent years have seen a surge in arrivals from war torn countries such as Syria and Yemen. It is thought 100,000 Muslims arrive in the US every year.

Fertility rates are high among American Muslims, who tend to be significantly younger than their counterparts; 35% of Muslims are between the age of 18 and 29 compared with 21% of the general US public. Around one-fifth of Americans born into Islam said they are no longer affiliated with the faith.

According to Pew, American Muslims are unevenly distributed with New Jersey and Washington DC having the largest communities. In New Jersey 3% of residents identify as Muslim - three times higher than most other states.

The growing prevalence of Muslims in everyday life means that Americans must address their relationship with followers, according to Ihsan Bagby, professor of Islamic Studies at Kentucky University.

"A large number of Americans have come to accept that, but others have not," he told NBC News.

"We're in this transition period where Islam is, to a large percentage of Americans, not really considered part of American society.

"The increase in numbers of Muslims will actually give them more opportunity to meet a Muslim. The more Muslims come, the more they spread out throughout American society."

Man impregnates mother-in-law

Victoria Ulaha is in a dilemma. If it were possible, she would turn back the hands of time and wish all that happened to her never did.

According To LINUS OOTA, this native of Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, is married to John Ulaha, 45, of Awe Local Government Area of the same state, a farmer and carpenter in Lafia. Both husband and wife are in agony as you read this.

The problem is that in sowing his wild oats, John Ulaha impregnated another woman. What makes his sin so obnoxiously unforgivable? The woman in question is his mother-in-law! Right now, his wife is in a great fix as to what to do about the ugly and shameful development.

Victoria, blessed with a daughter, lives in Lafia where she manages a provision store while her husband runs a carpentry workshop. But by way of augmenting their incomes, they are heavily involved in farming activities in Awe, where they hire labourers to work on their farms.

Inviting trouble in an innocuous way

After the implementation of anti-grazing law in Benue State pushed over 85% of Fulani herdsmen from Benue to settle in Awe, they started destroying, at an alarming rate, farmlands belonging to others.

This situation made Victoria to invite her mother who is a widow to come over and help her husband harvest their farm produce of yam and guinea corn since she was very busy with her shop business in Lafia. In the course of time, sometime in mid-September 2017, John and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Ashetu Igbasue, 42, relocated to Awe in order to fast-track their harvesting.

Three months into the pair’s sojourn, the bubble burst and Victoria found a big scandal on her hand when her mother came reporting dejectedly that she was pregnant. For whom? Her daughter’s husband!

“I’m distressed, I don’t know how to handle this matter,” Victoria told Saturday Sun as she threw her hand helplessly into the air. “I got married to my husband nine years ago. The marriage is blessed with a baby girl and my mother used to come around to spend some time with us especially when she lost her husband.

“But this time around, I personally requested that she should come and help us do some work on the farm. Since then she had been in the village with my husband helping on the farm, though both of them used to come to Lafia regularly to pick supplies and go back because they were determined to evacuate all crops from the farm to the house before herdsmen could come to destroy them.

“There was a time my husband came to Lafia to get some cooking ingredients and I asked him whether they were feeding well. He told me lightheartedly that my mother’s cooking was more delicious than mine. I did not suspect anything bad. I believed my husband. And, moreover, the woman in question is my mother, not a rival.”

The disastrous deed

“The last time my mother came to Lafia from my husband’s village, she shockingly told me that she did not see her period for the first and second month running which implies that she is pregnant and said that my husband is responsible for it. She said she wants it aborted because it would be a shameful thing for her to be pregnant at her age when her husband is not alive.

“I invited her to come and assist me to take care of our farm work since Fulani people have been destroying it, but I did not know that my husband had established a love relationship with her. She confessed to me that my husband was responsible for her pregnancy.”

Expressing her disappointment at her husband’s behaviour, Victoria remarked: “It would have been better for him to get a second wife who will be stationed at home or even look for a girlfriend to satisfy him in my absence rather than going into a love affair with my own mother; it is a very shameful thing and an abomination of the highest order; it is wrong.”

Victoria who said she is ashamed and rattled by the development, promised to take proper action after she recovers from the shock. But for now, she had ruled out the option of opting out of the marriage.

How and why the devil struck

The mother-in-law, Mrs. Igbasue, said that it all started in the farm during a joke which led to sex later in the night when they returned from the farm. “I agreed to his demand for sex and thought it was just to satisfy his sexual feelings, but somehow, it became a daily thing,” she confessed.

“I never thought I could get pregnant due to my age. I told my daughter the truth so that we can get a solution to it and out of anger she went public with it. I have since regretted my action. My intention is to find a way and abort it. My daughter earlier agreed to look for somebody to abort it for me because I can’t keep it. The whole thing was temptation and I completely regret it. I have pleaded for forgiveness from her.”

When our correspondent confronted John with the issue, he was furious that his wife had let the cat out of the bag to Saturday Sun on what he considers to be a “family affair” and, therefore, supposed to be resolved internally. He claimed that his mother-in-law seduced him by always exposing herself while they worked on the farm, especially, whenever both of them came together to eat.

“She would always sit half-naked before me; at first, it was embarrassing to me,” he said. “But I later discovered that her actions were an open invitation and as a man, I was tempted at a point, and that led to something else. And we both continued in that order until our actions resulted in pregnancy.”

Recall, regret and retribution

John who attributed the whole scandal to Satan’s work, added that he never imagined that the woman could become pregnant. He admitted that he has deeply offended God as well as his wife for going too far by sleeping with his mother-in-law to extent of getting her pregnant, adding that the pregnancy won’t stand as he will do his best by pleading with his wife to accept aborting it.

“I have regretted what happened. It is not in my character and the shame this very act has brought to me, my wife and the entire village as well as those who know me is unbearable,” he lamented. “Since my wife leaked this out, I have not been comfortable and have lost appetite for food. I have been pleading with her to forgive me because it is the devil’s work.”

Yellow Buses ( Danfo) Will Be Out Of Lagos Roads Soon

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday revealed that the first set of 5,000 new buses that would replace ‘danfo’ bus will be unveiled within the next six months.

The governor made this known when students of the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government, United States of America, paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House in Ikeja.

He said the 5000 new buses would be the first step by his administration to change the existing transportation system predominantly driven by the yellow buses, popularly known as danfo.

He said: “In the last one year, we have decided that we must integrate rail, road water and air transportation systems in such a way that the system of connectivity is improved upon and I would like to have a direct partnership on how that can actually be actualised.

“Right now, we are cleaning out all the yellow buses you see in the state. As we proceed in the next six months and a span of three years, we are introducing 5,000 new buses of European standard to actually clean up the city, because, if you want to grow the economy of Lagos, transportation is key and then it’s a major infrastructure for tourism itself.

“The question is: How do you move 23 million people on a daily basis from point A to point B with ease and comfort? So, the way the city has been so designed in the last few years, the city has actually concentrated on only one mode of transportation, which is road transportation.

“There are eight million people walking on the streets of Lagos every minute, did we create more points for them? The answer is ‘no’. We have one-fifth of the state on water, are we doing effective water transportation? The answer is ‘no’.

“The rail system is still under construction in such a way that it can move mass number of people from one point to another. That is why we have a whole lot of congestion on the road.

Vehicle Movement Will Be Restricted In Agege Area On January 4

The Lagos State Government says it will partially restrict vehicular movement in the Agege area from January 4, 2018.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Olujimi Hotonu, in a statement on Monday said the move was to accelerate the ongoing construction of the Pen Cinema Flyover.

Hotonu added that there would be a complete closure of roads in the area sometimes during the construction.

He said,  However, adequate arrangements have been firmed up to mitigate the impact of the closure of the roads on motorists and residents. Traffic diversion routes have been created to ensure ease of movement along the corridor.

The construction of the flyover embarked upon by the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is part of the continuous drive to ease traffic in the metropolis and boost the economy.

The permanent secretary said the restriction of movement would last for between three and six months.

He said,  Vehicles coming from Ogba/Oba Ogunji, except articulated vehicles, are expected to come in through Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate to link Iju Road; articulated vehicles and other vehicles have the option of either turning right towards Iju Road at the Pen Cinema intersection or left towards Moshalashi Alhaja.

Vehicles coming from Iju Road should go towards Moshalashi Alhaja or turn towards Oba Ogunji/ Ogba as the turning towards the right to the Railway crossing will remain closed.

There will be a complete closure of the road for vehicles coming from Moshalashi Alhaja towards the Railway crossing, while vehicles coming from Moshalashi Alhaja will be expected to either move towards Iju Road or turn right towards Oba Ogunji/Ogba Road

Isreal Govt. Orders Africans To Leave Within 90 Days Or Face Imprisonment

The Israeli government has issued a warning to thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.

According to BBC News, the migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days. They will be given the option of going to their home country or a third countries. If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April.

The UN refugee agency said the controversial plan violated international and Israeli laws. The Israeli government says their return will be humane and “voluntary”.

The order exempts children, elderly people, and victims of slavery and human trafficking. A spokesperson for Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority told the BBC that there were currently 38,000 “infiltrators” in Israel, of whom just 1,420 were being held in detention facilities. Israel uses the term “infiltrators” to describe people who did not enter the country through an official border crossing.

Many of the migrants who are mostly from Eritrea and Sudan say they came to Israel to seek asylum after fleeing persecution and conflict, but the authorities regard them as economic migrants. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that an unchecked influx of African migrants could threaten Israel’s Jewish character.

Muslim man beaten to death after complaining about loud New Year music played near Muslim graveyard

A group attacked Waseem Ansari with kitchen implements when he asked them to stop playing music.

A Muslim man was beaten to death in the Indian state of Jharkhand after he asked a group to stop playing loud music on New Year's Day.

19-year-old Waseem Ansari was attacked by several people after he requested that they turned down their tunes on Monday (1 January).

The labourer was beaten to death with cooking implements in his home village of Mandar, near to the state capital Ranchi.

People blocked the state motorway on Tuesday (2 January), demanding the arrest of the suspects. Extra security personnel have been deployed to maintain peace between the Muslim and Hindu communities in Jharkhand following the killing.

A senior police officer told BBC Hindi: "Preliminary inquiry suggests that a group was playing loud music to celebrate New Year's Day.

"Waseem Ansari and two of his friends approached the group and told them to stop playing loud music. This led to an argument and Waseem was attacked by the group. It seems he was hit by one of the sharp instruments used in cooking."

The officer said that the "suspects will be arrested soon".

Hasibul Ansari witnessed the attack. He told the BBC: "These people were partying near a Muslim graveyard. When Waseem told them to stop, they killed him.

"His friends were lucky that they managed to escape in time. I am very sure they would have been killed too if they had not escaped."

100 years of the crocodile •Story of a political city

MUHAMMAD SABIU captures the pomp and circumstance that attended the centenary (100 years) celebration of the founding of Kaduna as the administrative capital of the northern region, adding that efforts are underway to restore its glorious past.As published by tribuneonlineng.com

ABOUT 100 years ago, an event that was to change the political history of the northern region, nay the entire country, took place. Before then, the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates had taken place in 1914, bringing into existence a new nation called Nigeria. At that time also, the administrative capital of the northern protectorate was in Zungeru, in present day Niger State.

The then Governor-General of Nigeria, Sir Fredrick Lugard, in his administrative wisdom thought it wise to move further inland. He then moved from Zungeru to Kaduna, which derived its name from Kada, the local Hausa word for crocodile, which was in abundance then in the river also named after the town.

Defending his action for moving the capital to Kaduna, Lugard was reported to have said: “The climate here is invigorating; the soil is good and adapted for vegetable and flower gardens. The water supply pure and inexhaustible, and the site is within 81 kilometres of the great trade centre of Zaria.”

Since then, Kaduna has continued to be the rallying point of people of the region. According to a resident, Mallam Ibrahim Agaie, the importance of Kaduna to the northern region was evident in the presence of diverse people from Borno, Adamawa, Biu, Gombe, Otukpo, Makurdi, Plateau, Okene, Kabba, Offa, Lokoja, Bida, Gusau, Sokoto and even beyond, who came in search of greener pastures.

These people are of indigenous ethnic groups such as the Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Gbagyi, Jaba, Ikulu, Kataf ninzom, Kaninkon, Adara, Yoruba and Igbo, among others.

Over time, the population of the new administrative capital grew, leading to the creation of new settlements, such as Unguwar Kanawa, Abakpa, Unguwar Shanu, Unguwar Sarki, Unguwar Rimi, Malali, Unguwar Dosa, Magaji Gari, Kakuri, Makera, and Barnawa, within a short time.

“If you come to Kaduna today, there are a lot of people from these places I earlier mentioned, who have now adopted Kaduna as their home. Honestly speaking, most of us cannot leave. I built my house here over 40 years ago. I had all my 13 children here. If you ask me to leave, where would I go?” Mallam Agaie from Agaie, Niger State, asked rhetorically.

Things fall apart

However, events of the last three decades have left much to be desired as the once peaceful city became the theatre of war. According to the state governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, in an interview with Sunday Tribune, the state had witnessed 14 sectarian crises that culminated in the loss of thousands of innocent lives and the destruction of property worth billions of naira.

Furthermore, the city of Kaduna today has been divided into North and South. The North is predominantly Muslim with residents living in areas like Unguwar Sarki, Unguwar Rimi, Magajin gari, among others, while the South is predominantly occupied by Christians who live in areas such as Sabo, Television, Romi, Gonin gora and others.

The collapse of the textile industry and other companies has also worsened the situation in the crocodile city. Many former residents had left the state in search of greener pastures and more peaceful towns to reside. Others had relocated to the parts of the country where they originally came from.

Though, the once monolithic North is now made up 19 states, Kaduna is still playing the role of a former capital of the region. For example, the meeting of the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) is still taking place in Kaduna. Also, the meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) takes place there, including meetings of the Muslim Ummahs in the region and the country at large.

Centenary Durbar

It was against this backdrop that the state government decided to use this month of December to celebrate the centenary of the city, during which the major event, the durbar was held on Saturday 16th December, 2017 at the Murtala Muhammed Square, which attracted thousands of people from all walks of life.

Durbar is one of the important events celebrated in the North. Usually a durbar is celebrated during the two Muslims festival: Eid el-Fitr and Eid el-Kabir.

However, Sunday Tribune learnt that in modern history, the region had only witnessed about five durbars.  The first recorded durbar known as the Queen’s durbar was held in 1926 in Kano. The durbar was organised by the then Queen of England for the region.

After that another durbar was held in honour of the visiting Queen Elizabeth of England in 1956 in Kaduna. One of the hallmarks of the event was when the then Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi, the grandfather of the present emir of Kano attended the epic occasion in a green Rolls Royce.

History would repeat itself at the just concluded durbar, when the current emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, came into the venue in the same 1956 Rolls-Royce.

In 1973, a durbar was held in honour of His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia in Kaduna, while another was held in 1977 in Kaduna to honour the contingents of the first Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (Festac77).

It was gathered that at the 1977 durbar, two Emirs – the Emirs of Zazzau and Jama are attended the durbar as young rulers. Again, they were among the traditional rulers that attended the 2017 durbar in Kaduna.

Declaring the durbar open, the Shehu of Borno, Garbai El-Kanemi, paid glowing tributes to the leaders of region. He advised that the sacrifice made by the two Northern icons, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa should not be allowed to go in vain.

In his own remarks, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno noted that Kaduna is strategic for the survival of the North, as well as the country saying, “if Kaduna sneezes, the entire region, as well as the whole country, would be affected,” claimed Shettima, calling for a united region in line with the dream of the late icons.

Also speaking on the occasion, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, said Kaduna was destined to play a significant role in the development of the region. He noted that important decisions that had shaped the destiny of the country were taken in the “crocodile city.”

“So, celebrating the 100 years of its existence as a political capital of the region is by no means a child›s play and I’m happy this celebration is happening under a progressive government,” he said.

Governor, El-rufai said in his own speech that “in the next 100 years, we are determined to develop the eastern part of the city as well as manage the orderly expansion of our metropolis.”

To achieve this, he said: “This APC government has, therefore, passed a law to protect the master plan of Kaduna and we extended the city limits to 40 km radius from the post office.

“Thus, we celebrate the first 100 years of Kaduna, not because they have been perfect. We celebrate not because there have not been regrettable incidents in this city. We celebrate because Kaduna must be a Northern dynamo of progress and a natural model of development.”

An estimated 3,000 horses participated in the durbar which has been tagged the biggest durbar in modern history. Highlights of the epic event included a photo exhibition which shows different historical pictures that shaped the region in the last one hundred years. Also, there were cultural displays by other ethnic groups like the Tiv, Yoruba, Igbo, Birom, among others, who had made the city their home.

Among the dignitaries that attended the event were former Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Ibrahim Coomasie; Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima and chairman of the Northern states Governors Forum, Aminu Bello Masari.

Others were the deputy governors of Zamfara, Bauchi and Plateau states, including 11 Northern traditional rulers, amongst whom were the Shehu of Borno, El-Kanemi and Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar.

Though Kaduna like every other city is evolving, it may take some time to recover its cosmopolitan character which obtained in the 70s and 80s. But hopefully, in the next few decades it might just achieve the aim of the founding father(s) as a home for all, not only northerners but also for every Nigerian.

Confusion As Kwankwaso plan To Visit Kano By Road

After a sojourn from his birthplace for several months Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, an APC presidential aspirant and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, is reported to have planned to return to Kano next Saturday, December 30, 2017.

It will be the second time he will be visiting his Kano Central Constituency since he became senator about three years ago (do you wonder?). And because he has made Kaduna his second home, it is most likely that he will travel by road. In fact, it is not the first time he will be travelling from Kaduna to Kano by road.

In the past, whenever he made such trips his supporters were stationed along the road to welcome him. Some of them however have made the habit of blocking the highway at strategic places, especially after Kwanar-Dangora. As a victim of one of such roadblocks while on my way from Zaria, I had the misfortune of experiencing the agony drivers suffer during such holdups.

Settlements such as Dakatsalle, Kura, Kwanar Rano and Kwanar Dawakin Kudu were deliberately made impassable to motorists on the highway. This illegality is usually perpetrated from the afternoon up till about 6.00 pm when Kwankwaso’s entourage is expected to reach those places, thus causing untold hardship to thousands of road users like myself on that day.

Actually, on the said day I had no choice but to join other disgruntled drivers who were anxious to reach Kano and had to divert from the main road through villages to avoid the long row of stationary vehicles. Unfortunately for us, as the diversion could not continue all the way to Kano we had to return back to the highway before Kwanar Rano, only to meet another roadblock there.

It is said that the blockage of the road is made purposely with the intention of amassing hundreds of vehicles that ply the road daily from various parts of the country and forcing them to join the politician’s convoy to accompany him to Kano. Reportedly, the aim of this “ingenious” political strategy is to create the impression that the long row of vehicles entering Kano is part of the political icon’s entourage that accompanied him all the way from Kaduna.

In other words, they want the impression to be created that he and his supporters are such popular politicians in Kano that they could be able to win elections any day. Hopefully, this would deceive the gullible among the electorate and ultimately create the bandwagon effect on Election Day.

As the trip is purposely delayed until late evening in order to create maximum effect, by the time his entourage arrives home by night all the streets leading to his residence such as Zaria Road, Hospital Road, Court Road and Zoo Road are usually chocked up with hundreds of vehicles with drivers and their passengers fuming with anger.

Even adjoining ones such as Maiduguri Road at Hotoro and Tarauni areas are sometimes flocked by vehicles that had tried to escape from Zaria Road through Eastern bypass to get to other parts of the town. As a result of this development thousands of commuters are made to suffer unnecessarily. And for several days after the incident the motorists involved in the debacle would be complaining loudly about how politicians are allowed by the security agencies to violate people’s rights as they liked.

In view of this therefore, I call on the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf, to please put a stop to this act of impunity. The illegal roadblocks on Zaria-Kano road that would most likely take place next Saturday when the Senator returns should hence be outlawed this time around.

The CP should order his men to patrol the road right from the Kaduna/Kano border up to Dangi roundabout on the day. Some policemen should also be stationed in the settlements mentioned above to prevent the illegal roadblocks by miscreants. It goes without saying that politicians seeking the support of ordinary folks who constitute the bulk of the electorate should not do anything senselessly that would incur their wrath.

They should always endeavor to behave honourably and avoid acting heartlessly with regard to other road users when they travel. They should be wary of being seen to always be more concerned about their political interests because this will give the impression, rightly or wrongly, that they are pretentious whenever they speak about seeking power to serve public interest.

Bashir Gwandu, friend of President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, is also in comma at the intensive care unit of Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja.

Bashir Gwandu is Yusuf’s best friend with whom he collided in a horror crash on Tuesday night. It was gathered from a reliable source  that the accident occurred when Yusuf revved up the engine of his motorbike to overtake Bashir Gwandu, and suddenly lost control of the machine.

“The accident happened when Yusuf was trying to overtake Bashir. They collided and somersaulted. “They lay unconscious there for a while before permission was sought to take them to the hospital,” said a source.

It was also gathered that a security vehicle was trailing and giving cover to the president’s son when the accident occurred along Ahmadu Bello Way (near NEXT supermarket), Abuja.

Rumours were rife on Thursday morning that Yusuf was flown to Germany for treatment but spokesman for the president, Garba Shehu, dismissed the rumours.

It was also revealed that Yusuf would still be flown abroad for treatment as soon as his condition improves.

It is however unclear if Yusuf would be flown abroad alongside his friend, Bashir Gwandu, for further medical attention.
